Although the technical start of Autumn isn’t for a few more weeks (hurry up, I know you’re there), September always seems to feel like the unofficial launch. So, I thought today I’d bring you a recipe to use up summer melons and start the morning off cool and fresh, light and healthy.

A blend (no pun intended) of seasons while we sit straddling the two.

Spiced Cantaloupe Smoothie [serves 2]

The quantity can easily be increased, making it perfect to serve as breakfast to house guests or for Sunday brunch. A more traditional way to enjoy a cantaloupe smoothie is to replace the pumpkin pie spice with 1/4 t grated fresh ginger, then add 1 T honey and the juice from 1/2 lime.

1 c ice cubes

2 c cubed, peeled cantaloupe

1/2 c plain kefir (or yogurt)

a pinch or more of pumpkin pie spice, to taste (make your own)

Combine ice cubes, cantaloupe and kefir in a blender; blend until smooth. Add a small pinch of pumpkin pie spice (remember, this is a potent spice mix) and blend again. Taste and add more spice if necessary. Serve immediately, in chilled glasses if you prefer.
